No top honour for 26/11 martyrs?
On January 26, four of the sixteen Mumbai policemen who died during the 26/11 terror attacks will be honoured with Ashok Chakras. Thirteen Mumbai Policemen had been recommended for the honour, but only four including the late ATS Chief Hemant Karkare made the cut. The government has already said it would not be possible for it to give the Ashok Chakra to everyone recommended, as it’s the highest award given during peace time.

Unprecedented number of Ashok Chakra this year
Six security personnel, who laid down their lives fighting terrorists in the Mumbai terror attacks, have been selected for Ashok Chakra, the highest peace-time gallantry award. Anti-Terrorists Squad Chief Hemant Karkare, Additional Commissioner of Mumbai police Ashok Kamte, ‘encounter cop’ Inspector Vijay Salaskar, Asst Sub-Inspector Tukaram Omble, NSG commando Major Sandeep Unikrishnan and NSG Havaldar Gajender Singh have been honoured with the prestigious award posthumously.

PARAM VIR CHAKRA
The PVC was established on 26 January 1950 (the date of India becoming a republic), by the President of India, with effect from 15 August 1947 (the date of Indian independence). It can be awarded to officers or enlisted personnel from all branches of the Indian military. It is the second highest award of the government of India after Bharat Ratna (amendment in the statute on 26 January 1980 resulted in this order of wearing). It replaced the former British colonial Victoria Cross (VC)
