A dance videography produced by Associate Professor of Dance Kim Arrow will be featured at the week-long Attakkalari India Biennial at the Attakkalari Center for the Performing Arts in Bangalore in early February. Shot mostly in Australia, his work (excerpted here) mixes dance, video, and live music in what one reviewer calls “a beautifully integrated ode to the primal dreamtime, flecked with concerns over the vulnerability of aboriginal culture and land.”

“I fully support a dance film festival with a diverse agenda,” says Arrow, “including a commitment to socially responsible and issue-related work, as well as a mission of advancing current trends in technology-based choreography.” Arrow will also participate in a seminar on digital dance production at the Biennial, a showcase of global movement arts with a special focus on works that incorporate new and emerging technologies in digital arts.

Arrow, an accomplished dancer and choreographer, is the recipient of two Fulbright Fellowships and a Pew Fellowship in the Arts for choreography, among other awards, and has directed Swarthmore Taiko (pdf) since 2000. He joined Swarthmore’s faculty in 1991.

Ian Rankin talks about the new Rebus novel

Posted on February 26th, 2010 by admin in fulbright awardees | 13 Comments »

There’s more information about Ian Rankin here… http://www.orionbooks.co.uk/5814-1/Author-Ian-Rankin.htm

The year 2007 marks Detective Inspector John Rebus’s last year in the Scottish police force. Forced to retire by both the law and his – relieved – superiors, Rebus knows that his time in the blue ranks must now come to an end.

But how will the irascible detective deal with this grim terminus? Particularly with his nemesis, Ger Cafferty, still walking the streets of Edinburgh. And how will John’s protege and friend Siobhan Clarke move forward with the old relic finally gone?

Ian Rankin:
Born in the Kingdom of Fife in 1960, Ian Rankin graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1982, and then spent three years writing novels when he was supposed to be working towards a PhD in Scottish Literature. His first Rebus novel was published in 1987, and the Rebus books are now translated into twenty-two languages and are bestsellers on several continents.

Ian Rankin has been elected a Hawthornden Fellow, and is also a past winner of the Chandler-Fulbright Award, as well as receiving two Dagger Awards for the year’s best short story and the Gold Dagger for Fiction. Ian Rankin is also the recipient of honorary degrees from the universities of Abertay, St Andrews and Edinburgh.

A contributor to BBC2’s ‘Newsnight Review’, he also presented his own TV series, ‘Ian Rankin’s Evil Thoughts’, on Channel 4 in 2002. He recently received the OBE for services to literature, opting to receive the prize in his home city of Edinburgh, where he lives with his partner and two sons.

Reel Bad Arabs – How Hollywood vilifies a People- Part 6/6

Posted on February 20th, 2010 by admin in fulbright awardees | 1 Comment »

REEL BAD ARABS
How Hollywood Vilifies a People
Director: Sut Jhally

SYNOPSIS

This groundbreaking documentary dissects a slanderous aspect of cinematic history that has run virtually unchallenged from the earliest days of silent film to today’s biggest Hollywood blockbusters. Featuring acclaimed author Dr. Jack Shaheen, the film explores a long line of degrading images of Arabs–from Bedouin bandits and submissive maidens to sinister sheikhs and gun-wielding “terrorists”–along the way offering devastating insights into the origin of these stereotypic images, their development at key points in US history, and why they matter so much today.

Shaheen shows how the persistence of these images over time has served to naturalize prejudicial attitudes toward Arabs and Arab culture, in the process reinforcing a narrow view of individual Arabs and the effects of specific US domestic and internationl policies on their lives. By inspiring critical thinking about the social, political, and basic human consequences of leaving these Hollywood caricatures unexamined, the film challenges viewers to recognize the urgent need for counter-narratives that do justice to the diversity and humanity of Arab people and the reality and richness of Arab history and culture.

Jack Shaheen
Shaheen’s lectures and writings illustrate that damaging racial and ethnic stereotypes injure innocent people. Dr. Shaheen, an Oxford Research Scholar, is the recipient of two Fulbright teaching awards.
